The YMCA NSW Junior Parliament is a short-term program for 12-15 year olds based on the YMCA NSW Youth Parliament that introduces participants to the legal and parliamentary processes of NSW and focuses on their personal development and growth as community leaders.
Junior Parliamentarians spend two days in NSW Parliament House for a realistic simulation of a parliamentary sitting in which they present ideas to solve issues that they are passionate about. Current Members of Parliament preside over debates and provide feedback and all proceedings are reported back to the Government.
In 2013, the YMCA NSW ran the inaugural Junior Parliament program, which was held between 23-27 September 2013. In its inaugural year, the program involved 73 participants from 48 electorates with eight Committees investigating the following areas:
- Aboriginal Affairs
- Infrastructure and Planning
- Women’s Affairs
- Justice, Juvenile Justice and Police
- Citizenship and Communities
YMCA NSW Junior Parliament will be back in 2014 so watch this space!
